The Indian navy’s iconic INS Tarangini will be arriving at the Valletta Cruise Port terminal in Malta on 29th May 2022. The Sail Training Ship (STS), built in Goa and commissioned in November 1997, has steamed over 250,079 nautical miles in her 24 years of commission, and is in her silver jubilee year.

The name Tarangini is derived from the Hindi word ‘Tarang’ meaning waves, thus Tarangini means ‘the one that rides the waves’.

The ship is a ‘three-masted Barque’ signifying that she is square rigged on foremast and mainmast, and fore and aft rigged on Mizzen Mast.

The ship has twenty sails (eight square and twelve fore and aft) with 206 ropes to handle.

The primary role of the ship is to foster time-honoured virtues of courage, camaraderie and endurance in officer cadets embarking on a naval career.

Over the years, the ship has been deployed extensively for various missions and has successfully undertaken the Circumnavigation Voyage (2003-04) and four LOKAYAN voyages (2005, 2007, 2015 and 2018). The aim of these overseas deployments has been to undertake training of Sea Trainees, strengthening bi-lateral ties and showcasing the reach of Indian navy around the world.

The INS Tarangini provides budding officers of the navy a first-hand experience of life onboard a sailing ship and also broadens their horizons about cultures, traditions and customs of foreign lands. Port calls at foreign harbours and interactions with foreign naval personnel have strengthened the Indian navy’s belief in its system of training and functioning.

Those wishing to visit the ship may do so on between 29-30th May at the Valletta Cruise Terminal between 4-7pm.
