The Malta Tourism Authority announced that Malta has once again secured the top position in the ILGA-Europe Rainbow Index, making it the tenth consecutive year as Europe’s most LGBTIQ+ inclusive country.

In response to this news, Minister for Tourism Ian Borg remarked: “This ranking strengthens Malta’s global reputation as a destination that celebrates diversity, while simultaneously supporting the wellbeing and human rights of every individual.”

Carlo Micallef, CEO of the Malta Tourism Authority, also shared his thoughts on this continued recognition, saying that this ranking “enhances our reputation as a destination of choice for travellers seeking safety, respect, and authenticity.”

Malta’s top classification is reinforced by recent policy and social developments that continue to advance equality and inclusion;

  • Legal gender recognition reform: Malta now officially recognises non-binary individuals on legal documents.
  • Dar il-Qawsalla: The inauguration of this transitional community home provides semi-independent supported accommodation for LGBTIQ+ individuals experiencing housing insecurity or socio-economic vulnerability.
  • LGBTIQ+ Wellbeing Hub: A newly established support centre offers free psychosocial services to LGBTIQ+ individuals and their families.
