MDA calls on PN not to politicise PA CEO controversy over Yorgen Fenech chats

The Malta Development Association (MDA) is calling on the Nationalist Party not to politicise delicate situations, particularly the controversy surrounding Planning Authority CEO Johann Buttigieg.

The appeal comes after Partit Nazzjonalista (PN) issued a statement on Thursday reminding the PA CEO that around 34 entities, including environmental and civil society organisations, youth and student organisations, and residents’ associations, have called for his removal, arguing that he is not fit to continue leading the Planning Authority.

On Thursday, Moviment Graffitti and Friends of the Earth Malta also staged a direct action during a press conference, calling for the immediate removal of the Planning Authority CEO.

There has also been increased scrutiny of the PA CEO following the publication of private conversations between him and businessman and former Tumas Group CEO Yorgen Fenech.

The conversations between Mr Buttigieg and Mr Fenech touched on a range of matters, including the prospects of certain planning applications being approved, lewd exchanges, and requests for personal favours by Mr Buttigieg relating to establishments linked to Mr Fenech.

In an official statement, the MDA said that Mr Buttigieg has managed to make a significant difference within what has always been one of the most challenging authorities for successive governments.

The MDA said that the PN should be proactive and, in order to strengthen the confidence of Maltese and Gozitan businesses and investors, propose further reforms that the country urgently needs, while also clearly explaining how these reforms would be implemented, rather than falling into the temptation of riding the populist wave.

The Association believes that political discussion should focus on constructive proposals, meaningful reforms and practical solutions that can strengthen Malta’s institutions, economy and investment climate.
