Melita customers will be irked to learn that the major telecoms company has reported damage to one of its fibre cables, affecting the South area, resulting in “no service for our customers”.

The damage is understood to be internet, telephone and mobile services. It is unclear if TV is also impacted.

Taking to social media on Friday morning, Melita said:

“One of our fibre cables has been damaged affecting the South area, resulting in no service for our customers.

“The following localities have been impacted: Birgu, Birzebbugia, Bormla, Bulebel, Delimara, Fawwara, Fgura, Ghaxaq, Gudja, Hal Far, Kalkara, Kirkop, Kordin, Marsa, Marsascala, Marsaxlokk, MIA, Mqabba, Paola, Qajjenza, Qrendi, Safi, Senglea, Smart City, St Lucia, Tarxien, Xghajra, Zabbar, Zejtun, Zurrieq.

“Our shops in Paola, Tarxien, JLJ Ghaxaq and JLJ Marsaskala have also been affected and are currently closed.

“We are working to repair the cable and we will keep you updated.

“Please remember that calls to 112 (fire, ambulance, police) are designed to work from mobiles throughout any service interruption.”

*As of 11.30am, Melita wrote to say it was working as fast as possible, and that repairs may take up to four hours.

As of 2.30 pm, the company advised that full service has been restored to the following areas:

Ghaxaq, Marsa, Marsaxlokk and parts of Zejtun and Birzebbugia.

As of 4.15pm, service was also restored in:

Marsascala, Zejtun and parts of Zabbar, Tarxien, Paola and Fgura.
