The Maltese Government has announced a landmark initiative to roll out Microsoft’s AI-powered productivity tool, Copilot, to 8,000 public officials as part of a wider €4 million investment in digital transformation.

The announcement was made by Prime Minister Robert Abela during the opening of the Public Service Expo at the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre (MFCC) in Ta’ Qali. The move forms part of the Government’s broader strategy to modernise public administration and enhance efficiency through advanced technology.

Microsoft Copilot, integrated directly into officials’ laptops, is designed to streamline day-to-day operations by leveraging the power of artificial intelligence across applications such as Word, Excel, and Outlook. The rollout is set to take place over the next two years, with each public service employee receiving full access to the tool.

To ensure effective adoption, comprehensive training will also be provided, equipping staff with the skills needed to maximise the benefits of Copilot in their workflows.

In addition to the software deployment, the initiative includes the establishment of a Centre of Excellence operated in collaboration with Microsoft, the Government, and the Malta Information Technology Agency (MITA). This dedicated hub will act as a knowledge-sharing and innovation platform to drive AI integration across the public sector.

The Centre of Excellence is expected to play a key role in nurturing talent and fostering collaboration on AI-driven projects, enabling Malta to remain at the forefront of digital governance in the region.
