Opposition Leader Alex Borg calls for urgent MCESD meeting on power cuts

Leader of the Opposition Alex Borg has written to the Chairperson of the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD), requesting that an urgent meeting of the Council be convened to discuss the power cuts that have been impacting the country.

Malta faced heatwave temperatures over the past days, and localities across the country suffered power cuts. Residents took to social media to express their anger at the situation, describing sleepless nights, concern for the elderly and vulnerable, and the impact that the situation had on businesses.

In his request, Dr Borg said that the repeated and prolonged power cuts affecting Malta and Gozo over recent weeks can no longer be regarded as isolated incidents, but as a national challenge having a serious impact on families, workers, the self-employed, businesses and the economy as a whole.

The Opposition Leader said that thousands of families and businesses have suffered substantial financial losses due to damage to appliances and equipment, the loss of food and other products, as well as the serious difficulties caused to vulnerable people and those who rely on electrically powered medical equipment.

He is calling on the MCESD to discuss, without further delay, the resilience and capacity of the national electricity infrastructure, the immediate measures required to ensure a stable service, the economic impact of the crisis on families and businesses, support and compensation mechanisms for those who have suffered losses, “as well as the long-term investment plan required to provide Malta with modern infrastructure that is adequate for the country’s needs.”
