‘The transition to a greener & carbon-neutral economy for Malta will pump new life into our future’

Speaker Anglu Farrugia delivered an address to the parliamentary meeting on the occasion of the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), which is being held in Glasgow, Scotland.

In his address, Speaker Farrugia said that Malta has various legally binding targets to be met by 2030 as an EU member state and as a party to the multilateral legal instruments combatting climate change.

He said that “during the strenuous 2020 year, Malta updated the Climate Change Act, which is the primary legislation that contributes to the mitigation of climate change by limiting anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases and to protect and enhance greenhouse gas sinks and reservoirs.”

Speaker Farrugia added that “the Act also addresses adaptation to climate change by requiring Government to take measures for the prevention, avoidance, and reduction of the adverse impacts of climate change.”

In his concluding remark, Speaker Farrugia said:

“This year, Malta has embarked on an ambitious 30-year journey towards decarbonisation, which involves a Low Carbon Development Strategy and a plan to have cleaner vehicles on our roads. Hence, the transition to a greener and carbon-neutral economy for Malta will pump new life into our future for the benefit of society.”
