Y-plate and taxi voyages rose by 2 million between same 4-month period in 2025 and 2026

The number of voyages carried out by Y-Plate operators and taxis increased by over 2 million when comparing a period of 4 months in 2025, with the same months in 2026, information issued by Sustainable Mobility Minister Chris Bonett shows.

Responding to a Parliamentary Question posed by PN MP Adrian Delia, the minister said that comparing the period of February to May 2025, with the same period in 2026, the number of voyages rose from 3,008,367 to 5,061,576, an increase of 68.2 per cent.

He said that the demand in the market for these services is growing at a quicker rate than the number of active operators. The number of active operators within the same period grew from 2,049 to 2,419, an 18.1 per cent increase, the minister said.

The information, Minister Bonett said, is based on internal reports, factual data, and operational analysis carried out by the authority.

On average, the number of trips per operator increased from around 1,469 between February and May 2025 to around 2,093 during the same period in 2026. This represents an average increase of around 624 trips, or 42.5 per cent, per operator, he said.

“These figures indicate that, despite the increase in the number of operators, demand rose at a faster rate. This also shows that the Government’s policy in favour of alternative means of mobility is bearing fruit, as more residents and tourists are making use of these services.”

Dr Delia also asked the minister to state how many taxi and y-plate permits were suspended, revoked or were under investigation between February and May this year. The minister said that 96 Y-plate operators were.
