FELTOM, the Federation of English Language Teaching Organisations Malta, has secured funding under the EU’s Horizon Europe programme to develop a new initiative in specialised English training, with a particular focus on the aviation sector.
This is the first time FELTOM has applied for and been awarded funding through the EU’s research and innovation programme, and also the first time a Maltese-led project centred on Aviation English has been submitted through Erasmus channels.
The 18-month project, set to begin in October, will be coordinated by FELTOM and will involve five of its member schools in Malta, working in partnership with the Bulgarian Air Force Academy.
It is intended to support the teaching of English in a sector where accuracy and precision are vital for safety, with English serving as the international standard for communication between pilots, air traffic controllers and other aviation professionals.
FELTOM CEO Jessica Rees-Jones described the award as “the next logical step” for the federation and its members, following what was reported as a strong rebound in demand for English language courses in its latest annual report.
“By branching into specialised English training, starting with aviation, we are opening doors to new markets and higher-value opportunities,” she said.
The initiative forms part of FELTOM’s broader strategy to diversify Malta’s language education sector beyond its traditional focus on general English.
Other professional areas being explored include maritime, medical, and technical English, with the aim of positioning Malta as a destination not only for general English learners but also for industry-specific training.
The project is expected to contribute to Malta’s EduTourism offering by tapping into niche areas of professional demand, while also reinforcing the country’s international standing in the English language teaching sector.
