A Malta-based game studio has presented a title at gamescom Opening Night Live, one of the biggest stages in global gaming, GamingMalta has said, describing it as a milestone for the local industry.

4A Games, the Maltese-Ukrainian developer based in Sliema, officially unveiled its anticipated title METRO 2039 during the event. This will be the fourth mainline entry in the series.

The studio was established in Kyiv, Ukraine in 2005. In 2014, the studio moved its headquarters, along with more than 50 team members and their families, from Ukraine to Malta.

“This is amazing news for us. It marks a first for Malta and puts a Malta-based studio in front of a huge global gaming audience. 4A Games may be based in Malta, but its audience is global. That is exactly the kind of trajectory Malta Vision 2050 aims to normalise,” GamingMalta said.

The post-apocalyptic FPS is also playable by the public in Cologne throughout the expo, giving fans a hands-on experience before its release in February 2027.
