Government looking to create a specialised Commercial Court, along with a dedicated Judge

Government will be looking to create a specialised Commercial Court in 2024, Finance Minister Clyde Caruana confirmed on Wednesday evening in Parliament when delivering the national budget speech for next year.

Ongoing efforts for this goal are not only being made on the legislative front, he said, but will also see the assignment of a specialised judge.

“This ties together ongoing works related to providing the necessary infrastructure for the creation of a speciliased Commercial Court,” Minister Caruana said.

Last month, Mr Justice Ian Spiteri Bailey was reported in the Times of Malta as criticising the authorities over “several cases of mismanagement in court” stemming from a “serious shortage of staff”, which, he said, was having “a drastic effect on the administration of justice.

Following this, the Justice Minister first announced the possibility of a specialised Commercial Court with dedicated staff.
