KM Malta Airlines ranks 6th best regional airline in Europe, CEO hails ‘proud moment’

KM Malta Airlines has been voted the 6th best regional airline in Europe in the Skytrax World Airline Awards 2026.

The World Airline Awards began in 1999, and includes a vast number of categories, such as the World’s Top 20 Airlines and the world’s best low-cost airlines. It also includes rankings for the world’s best regional airlines, and also the best regional airlines in specific regions like Europe.

Posting on social media, KM Malta Airlines CEO David Curmi described it as a “proud moment” both for the airline, and the country, noting that it achieved this result “after just two and a half years of operations.”

KM Malta Airlines had launched its first flight at the end of March 2024, after Air Malta, the former national airline, closed its doors following years of financial troubles 

“To be recognised alongside some of Europe’s well-established airlines is a significant achievement for our young airline – and a tribute to the dedication of our people. My sincere thanks goes to our entire team, whose professionalism, commitment and care shape our passengers’ experience every day, and to our customers for choosing KM Malta Airlines and placing their trust in us," Mr Curmi said.

He said that as Malta’s national airline, the airline takes pride in connecting the Maltese islands with Europe and beyond, “and in bringing a warm Maltese welcome to every journey.” This result encourages the airline to keep improving, he said.

Aegean Airlines was voted the best regional airline on the continent, followed by Air Dolomiti. The three airlines at the top of the world’s Top 20 list are Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways and Cathay Pacific.
