Malta’s first national scam awareness portal, ScamAlert.mt, has been launched.
The website, developed by the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA), the Malta Police Force and the Office of the Arbiter for Financial Services, was created to help consumers recognise scams, understand emerging threats, and access guidance on how to protect themselves, the MFSA explains.
The authority highlighted that scams are evolving rapidly, becoming increasingly sophisticated and difficult to identify, underlining the importance of the creation of this website.
The website brings together up-to-date scam alerts, practical guidance, and educational resources in one place. It provides information about different types of scams which people might come across, such as clone firm scams, when fraudsters create websites, adverts, or emails that imitate real licensed financial providers, and provides tips on how to spot a scam. In the above example, it recommends checking the URL for subtle misspellings and security encryption SSL.
It also includes a section for the latest warnings and announcements, another section about how to report a scam, and other resources.
