Malta continued to make significant progress in its transition towards cleaner energy, with renewable energy sources accounting for 18.8 per cent of the country’s energy consumption in 2025, according to the latest provisional Eurostat data.

The latest figures show an increase of 1.6 percentage points compared to 2024, when Malta’s renewable energy share stood at 17.2 per cent.

Since 2012, Malta has recorded a substantial increase in its renewable energy share, rising from less than 3 per cent to 18.8 per cent in 2025, representing a more than sixfold increase over this period.

Minister for the Environment and Energy Miriam Dalli said: “From less than 3 per cent in 2012 to almost 19 per cent today, Malta has made significant strides in its transition towards renewable energy. These numbers represent more families generating their own clean electricity, more businesses investing in sustainable technologies, and a country that is gradually becoming less dependent on fossil fuels. Our commitment is to ensure that the energy transition delivers tangible benefits for people. That means making renewable energy more accessible and affordable, helping families and businesses reduce their energy costs, and strengthening our country’s energy security,” Minister Dalli stated.

At 18.8 per cent, Malta now ranks ahead of several EU Member States, including Belgium (14.9 per cent), Slovakia (16.3 per cent) and Ireland (17.2 per cent). These provisional figures highlight Malta’s continued progress in increasing its renewable energy share, despite the geographical and size constraints faced by the country.

The latest results also represent another important step towards Malta’s national objective of achieving a 25 per cent renewable energy share by 2030. With renewable energy now accounting for almost one-fifth of the country’s energy consumption, Malta continues to make progress towards this ambitious target.
