The shortlist for the Car of the Year 2022 award is officially out, with 39 contenders being whittled down to seven nominees by the jury.

The jury is made up of motoring journalists from all over Europe, sadly none of which hail from Malta.

The 2022 nominees are:

The Cupra Born, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Peugeot 308, Renault Mégane E-Tech and Skoda Enyaq.

In line with a shift towards a greener automotive industry, of the seven nominees, just one model, the Peugeot 308, is not solely sold with an electric powertrain.

Last year, the Toyota Yaris took home the title for a second time, having first won the title back in 2,000 for its compactness, bold style and lively 1-litre engine.

In 2020, the Peugeot 208 took home the title, with the vehicle being hailed as efficient.

The competition has been ongoing since 1964, when the Rover 2000 took home the very first award.
