Bryan Johnson, a 45-year-old biotech entrepreneur is on a mission to de-age his body to one akin to an 18-year old. Not just from his external appearance, but also his organs. So far he’s actually on track, but is it worth it?

Bloomberg covered the lifestyle of Mr Johnson, who is set to spend $2 million (€1.85 million) a year on improving his body and so far results have been promising. According to medical experts, Mr Johnson has the heart of a 37-year-old, the skin of a 28-year-old, the lung capacity of an 18-year-old and the gum inflammation of a 17-year-old.

Mr Johnson wants to prove that “self-harm and decay are not inevitable.” However, the work and commitment necessary might not be for everybody.

Every morning, Mr Johnson wakes up at 5am and takes two dozen supplements and medicines. His regiment includes lycopene for artery and skin health, turmeric, black pepper and ginger root for liver enzymes and zinc to supplement his vegan diet.

Once he’s taken his fill of supplements he starts his daily, hour-long fitness routine covering 25 different exercises. Following the workout it is then time to eat.

His daily meals are not particularly delectable, consisting of liquified and semi-solid food such as a pureed assortment of vegetables and nutty pudding. At least for dessert, there’s chocolate (but a very particular dark chocolate high in polyphenol).

After every meal he brushes, flosses and waterpiks his teeth. He then rinses his mouth with tea-tree oil and applies an anti-oxidant gel on his teeth and gums. He also goes to great lengths to repair sun damage to his skin and improve his hearing. To track his progress Mr Johnson undergoes monthly analyses of his body, including blood tests to MRIs.

He hopes to inspire others to take on a similar lifestyle, challenge the concept of ageing and has even launched a website called the Rejuvenation Olympics, with an aptly titled slogan: ‘where you win by never crossing the finish line’. The website features a leaderboard, ranking 1,750 individuals in their pursuit of youthfulness, with Johnson currently ranking in first.
