KM Malta Airlines has added more flights and increased capacity following strong demand from Maltese citizens travelling back to Malta to vote in the upcoming general election.

The airline said that within the first two days of opening bookings for election travel, more than 1,000 return passengers had already booked flights to Malta to participate in the election. Approximately 90 per cent of bookings originated from Brussels and London.

In response, the airline secured additional airport slots and announced extra services from London Gatwick on 20th, 21st, 22nd, 24th and 31st May, as well as additional flights from Brussels on 21st, 22nd and 25th May.

The extra services are intended to accommodate voters travelling to Malta for early voting on 23rd May, as well as those planning to vote on election day on 30th May and return shortly afterwards.

The development follows growing discussion around the challenges faced by Maltese citizens living abroad who wish to vote in national elections.

As reported by WhosWho.mt yesterday, overseas voters argued that Malta’s current system still places significant logistical and financial burdens on citizens residing outside the airline’s direct network.

Dublin-based social justice expert and activist Ruth Baldacchino wrote that despite the subsidised fare scheme, returning to Malta to vote remains impractical for some citizens living abroad.

Similarly, Florence-based content specialist Christa Boffa argued that overseas citizens continue to face difficulties due to limited routes, additional travel costs, work disruption and short notice before elections.

KM Malta Airlines said that special election fares remain available across all scheduled routes operated by the airline, offering eligible voters flexibility to travel from across its European network.

Reservations continue to be handled through the airline’s dedicated General Election Call Centre, which will remain open daily between 08:00 and 20:00 until 29th May.
