Virtu Ferries Gozo, Gozo Fast Ferry suspend operations for Tuesday due to unfavourable conditions

Malta’s fast ferry operators, Virtu Ferries Gozo and Gozo Fast Ferry, early on Tuesday morning (today) announced the suspension of services, connecting Valletta, Malta with Mgarr, Gozo, due to unfavourable sea conditions.

First to announce the disruption to service early this morning, Gozo Fast Ferry wrote to its customers:

“Kindly be advised that due to the inclement weather conditions the Gozo Fast Ferry trips will be suspended for today, 26th October 2021 until further notice.”

A couple of hours later, Virtu Ferries Gozo also made the announcement, writing:

“Please be advised that due to unfavourable sea conditions, our trips for today, 26th October, will be suspended until further notice”.

Winds are scheduled to reach a maximum of 27km/hr this afternoon, while Wednesday and Thursday are poised to be even wetter and windier, calling into question the resumption of service for both operators over the next two days.

The car-carrying Mgarr-Cirkewwa Gozo ferry service has also announced possible disruptions, with crossings taking place so far, however this can change should conditions worsen.

Commuters looking to travel between the sister islands for work or studies will therefore have to rely on the Gozo Channel service to commute.

The connection between Malta and Gozo continues to be a highly contentious debate, with the Government’s plans to construct a below-sea-level car tunnel attracting both strong praise and harsh criticism.

The Government has also recently published studies about a proposed metro running through Malta, with Gozitan stakeholders questioning why no links to Gozo have been included, especially when it could be linked with the underground tunnel.
