“The Malta we want for our children,” said Prime Minister Robert Abela on Monday morning, hours before the Government, under the leadership of Dr Abela and Finance Minister Clyde Caruana, unveils their national Budget measures for 2022.

Taking to social media, Dr Abela further wrote that it is with future generations in mind that the Government has drafted and formulated its national Budget for the upcoming year.

“We work for the Malta we want to live in today. However, it must also be a stronger Malta for our children, so they may reach their aspirations”, he wrote.

While Malta’s constituted bodies have shared their ideas for how the Government should spend its money next year, Minister Caruana has already confirmed it will be another Budget without an increase in taxes.

With the highly valued COVID wage supplement due to end by December 2021, businesses will be more than keen to understand the level of support coming from Government until the global economy begins to resemble something similar to pre-pandemic times.

This will also be the Government’s last Budget before heading for a general election, which under Malta’s Constitution must happen by September 2022.

Traditionally, a Government’s last Budget before a general election tend to be viewed as generous, however with public debt and general state finances having taken a battering due to pandemic-related spending, it remains to be seen how generous tonight’s Budget will be.
